The Ship Shape Shoppe
A sole trader gained operational backup that scaled when business hit a chaotic year.
The situation.
Rebekah Holmes runs The Ship Shape Shoppe, a professional organising business she launched in April 2018. The business model is sole-operator, client-facing, time-as-revenue. Every hour Rebekah spends on her own back-office is an hour not earning, not selling, and not delivering the work the business exists to do.
The structural exposure for a sole operator is well known. The administrative work gets deferred when revenue work is in front of you. The deferral compounds. The longer it sits, the longer it takes to clear. And there is no team to escalate it to.
Rebekah recognised that pattern in her own business and acted on it before it became a crisis.
What we changed.
The engagement gave The Ship Shape Shoppe operational backup that scaled to whatever the business needed in a given week. The structural change was that the work that had been getting deferred – and the work that was overflow when the business hit busy patches – now had somewhere to go.
When the business hit the COVID-19 disruption, that engagement also became continuity infrastructure. Rebekah was able to pivot the business and develop new income streams while operational tasks she might have used as displacement activity instead ran in the background.
The outcome.
A sole trader gained the operational capacity equivalent of a small team without the overhead, management load, or commitment of hiring. The administrative debt that would have built up in a single-operator business did not build up. The COVID period – which broke a lot of sole traders – was navigated with operational backup already in place.
In Rebekah’s words.
"Without Admin Army, I wouldn't have been prepared for the pandemic to hit. I would have used this time to focus on tidying up the back end of the business and nitpicking the small details. Instead, I've been thinking of those things but handing them over. This has freed me up to pivot and create new income streams while my main bread and butter has been impacted."
